We're guessing you're plenty busy over the holidays. That's why, starting today, we're offering vac-packed build-your-own hors d'oeuvre kits so you can spend less time prepping food, less money paying a caterer, and more time with your friends and family.

Current selections include:

Don't forget, we've also got a great selection of cheeses from Ontario and Quebec, Pingue Prosciutto and Bresaola, awesome dips from our friends at La Natura and Mad Mexican, and lots, lots more.

Cafe Menu Tweaks

Just a quick one to let you know that our weekend cafe lunch is clicking along nicely, but we've made a few changes.

Some of them are just seasonal adjustments, but mostly, we just thought it was time to address three nagging problems:

1. Why haven't we worked our insanely good house-smoked turkey into the mix somewhere?

2. A regular sandwich is great and all, but are we missing any opportunities to dredge the bread in eggy goodness?

3. What about people who want french fries, but not (rather inexplicably, we think) a topping of Ontario cheese curds and delicious, delicious gravy?

We solved all three conundrums (or is that conundra? conundrumkit?) with just one of our new dishes, the Smoked Turkey Croque-Monsieur with a side of fries.

Check out the rest of the menu here, and hope to see you soon.

Hallowe'en KEG Party

Kawartha Ecological Growers is having its first annual Hallowe'en Fundraiser on Saturday, October 31st. Great cause, great food, live music, and a chance to get out of the city on Hallowe'en night - what more could you ask for? (Other than a ride back to town at the end, which is provided.)

Two catering gigs on the same day will be preventing us from attending personally, but we've donated some stuff to the raffle, and we'll of course be there...IN SPIRIT! (Cue Vincent Price laugh.)

Read more here. We've attached the flyer, too.

A great idea...

...although somewhat ironically, it came from faraway Colorado! Still, food for thought, and obviously dear to our hearts as a mom and pop shop.

30 in 20

A while back, we were asked by our friends Johanna and Zach at Dundas West gallery The DepARTment to participate in an incredibly cool exhibition which is launching in September.

Here's the lowdown from the DepARTment's site:

In 1973, living in Canada but originally from Holland, Toni (then forty-six) and Ria Harting (then thirty), planned a three-week trip to renew an acquaintance with fabled french cuisine in the country itself.

With the assistance of the authoritative Guide Michelin Rouge, the couple made a list of ten fabulous three-star restaurants in the eastern half of the country.

Having no intention of spending precious money on hotels and accommodation, they rented a Volkswagen camper with enough room to sleep.

These stars shine to this day, preserved in photographs and collected memorabilia to be shown to the public for the first time.

Thirty In Twenty is an art, food and wine exhibit celebrating the thirty stars of dining ecstasy enjoyed by the Hartings during their twenty day dining extravaganza.

This unique exhibition combines fantastic vintage photographs from the Harting's trip, paired with food and wine presented by some of Canada’s most celebrated chefs.

The media launch happens this evening, and Eric Walker, Pantry's seemingly inexhaustible chef, with a major assist from sous-chef Robert Heidenreich, put together some tasty little canapés in honour of the event.

And yes, there's still availability for the ticketed events over the next month. Check The DepARTment website for details.

Santé!

PS: Here's a sneak preview of the food we're bringing, more pics to follow...

A message from Monforte

Note: The following is an email letter sent out by Monforte Dairy, whose cheeses we carry in our store.

The folks at Monforte not only make great stuff, they're also lovely people that we're proud to call friends and allies in our love of local and sustainable eating.

Please consider purchasing a subscription to their cheese CSA. When you do, you'll be supporting a fantastic artisanal company which is in turn supporting more than 20 small Ontario farmers.

To sign up, follow the links below or grab a form at our store.

It's worth noting that we love their stuff so much, we actually bought a personal stash!

And now, here's the letter. Feel free to cut-and-paste it and send it along to any fellow food lovers:

You know how important food that's good, fair and local is to me - and I know great, sustainably produced food is important to you too.

That's why I'm writing to tell you aboutMonforte Dairy- a local dairy 99.83 miles from Toronto! Monforte Dairy makes superb, artisinal cheeses from humanely treated, Ontario sheep and goat milk, and soon from cow, water buffalo and mare's milk. The numbers say it all: since launching in 2004, Ruth Klahsen, Monforte's owner/proprietor, has doubled sales each and every year.
Monforte Renaissance 2010 is the Monforte's campaign to transform their new location at49 Griffith Road, Stratford ON into a functioning dairy by January 2010. I believe you'll want to help Monforte just as I have.

Monforte has already raised $215,000 from 445 people through their grassroots Community Shared Agriculture subscription program. But they still need to raise more money. The goal is $1 million.

I've helped Monforte fund the new dairy by purchasing a CSA subscription - a bold new initiative to help agricultural microproducers like Monforte attract new financing.
Community Shared Agriculture (CSA) is an alternative local food funding/marketing model. CSAs create a direct link between consumers and food producers diminishing the risk producers' bear while raising consumers' awareness of where their food comes from.

That means anyone - you and me for example - has the chance to be part of what the new dairy means: a secure home
  • for Monforte and the 20-some smallholder/shepherd-owned farms from which Monforte buys its milk
  • for the local producers who will supply Monforte with the ingredients for new complementary products such as charcuterie, flatbreads and crackers
  • for the artisans yet to be - the next generation of cheesemakers who will learn their craft in Monforte's apprenticeship program
I'm supporting Monforte with a CSA subscription and I'm encouraging you to do the same.

For more and to purchase a subscription online, please go to Monforte's terrific website atwww.monfortedairy.com.

Thanks so much

Pantry Private Dining

We've done a few private dining events lately and they're a great opportunity to get out the camera and take some pics.

Check 'em out here.

If you're interested in hosting your own event at our store, drop us a line.

Whether it's a fully planned dinner or a "chef's surprise" free-for-all, we've had nothing but raves.

The space is yours for the night - you can even bring your own tunes if you like (though we think ours are pretty good).

Next time you're thinking of dinner with a larger group (anywhere from 8-12), give us a call and we'd be delighted to put together a proposal for you.

New Store Pics

When our friend and tireless culinary man-about-town Suresh from Spotlight Toronto offered to come in and snap some pics of the store, we jumped at the chance. For those of you who haven't been in, these shots give you a nice sense of our environment.

Weird thing is, right before and right after these were taken, the store was full of people, but while he was popping pics, it was empty.

Suresh, was it something you said?

Have a look at the gallery here.

What Does Dad Really Want?

We're pretty sure that for a lot of fathers out there, the answer is bacon.

That's why we've stocked up: check out our house-cured peameal & sweet Canadian varieties, or grab a slab of Mario Pingue's incredible pancetta from Niagara.

Anniversary Party Wrap-Up

It's already been a week since our anniversary bash and it was high time we posted a huge thank you to everyone that came out - and everyone who continues to support us. We had a great time hanging out with all our wonderful suppliers and customers. It was a hoot.

For those that missed it, you can read an article by Deborah Keegan on food site Gremolata.

Again, thanks to everyone. It was a great first year. The second one's going to be even better.
